Unless you live in the USA, ignore the bulk of the lesson. (If you live in the USA and want to take my lesson, fine, but start on Page 1.) Scroll down to the bottom, "On-line genealogy Courses". There are four links. BYU is the most comprehensive. It is akin to taking a night course in a junior college.

This site (my bible) is a good starting place with lots of forums and volunteers who will help you for free. Infact every link on this site will give you free info to get you started.

Start by getting living members of your family to give you as much information as they can possibly remember...... that will help you tremendously.
Good luck with your hunt.

There's lots on line.
Try familysearch.org
It has some beginning instruction, a free downloadable program and a large data base.

Another great site (so great I rarely go anywhere else-I've used it for 10 years) is www.rootsweb.com. Their 'how to' is easy to understand and fun because they have funny graphics that make you smile.
