Sleep is necessary for the body to grow and heal itself. Medical science isn't entirely sure, but it is generally accepted sleep functions also to allow the conscious brain to "forget" unnecessary information, sort of like a computer hard drive doing a defrag. Sleep deprivation does not allow for this "forgetting" and the result is confusion, irritability and depression.
Next time, though, you may wish to ask this question in the "Health" section. The Christians are going to get upset.

Sleep gives our bodies rest and ensures that it is not overworked or stressed. It is just like a machine. The more you overwork it, the higher the chances for it to malfunction quickly.

I don't know wht regards you asking , as you have asked in religion section.......and don't know the religious importance of sleep :)
But when our body gets tired of functioning as ther is limit to every cell to function, we go to sleep to give some rest to our body fuctions....especialy the brain...after taking some sleep body's metabolism work properly !
