All you ever wanted o know about finches can be found in links that this website provides including photos or drawings of many varieties:
http://www.finchworld.com/
It is the male finch that has the vivid colors in most finches, and most of the photos and illustrations will show the male. House finches, for example, are very vivid in the male with brilliant red cheeks and throat, but the females are speckled brown and tan with very little red, even in breeding season which is usually the spring. When that occurs varies depending upon the weather and the availability of food. In warm climates finches will breed earlier than in cold ones. We have finches year round in the San Francisco Bay Area. They generally breed in March or April, but I once observed two breeding seasons in a year when the winter was particularly mild. Some species of finch are harder to differentiate between the sexes, and you have to look at bill color or some other markings to tell. A few species of finch are impossible to sex unless you have them in captivity and watch the female lay eggs.

Finches breed whenever they want and all year round. I placed a nest in my finches cage 3 weeks ago and 2 chicks hatched just the other day (I'm in the northeast and it is FREEZING here).

I think you could go to this site and ask some experts about it. I have a bird although it is not a finche and I love the site for questions and answers. I personally have an african grey parrot. I hope you like this site.

Generally, females are not as colorful as males. Of course if you don't have a male it might be difficult. For most birds, the females are generally bland colors like brown. Finches are a broad group. WHat type are you refering Zebras
