If lying on a white sandy beach is your idea of the perfect holiday -- DO NOT come to China! You'll be sorely disappointed, lying in brown mud or granite gravel, being constantly annoyed by the hundreds of thousands of people around you that have an entirely different idea of what activities are appropriate for the beach! China's a fascinating place to visit - but - not trying to hurt any Chinese people's feelings here - absolutely terrible beaches.

Go to India, Thailand, or Vietnam if you're on a budget - Brazil or the Seychelles if you're not. No kidding, I can't think of any country in the world that isn't land-locked that has worse beaches!

Don't be fooled by the hype - Sanya is not in any way shape or form similar to Hawaii, Xiamen does not look like Greece, and Dalian is nothing like San Francisco. They've all got their selling points - just not the beach.

Putuoshan near Shanghai has some nice beaches apparently but the best bet in China is the tropical island of Hainan!

Hainan Island has the best beaches, but the ones in Vietnam and Thailand are nicer. Hainan is mainly for Mainland Chinese tourists.
