Never use "ma amie". Although, your friend is female, and the rule is that you use "ma" with feminine nouns, there is another rule that overrides this rule.

That is: If the noun begins with a vowel, you always use the masculine form "mon". This is so that there is no pause between words. It flows better.

"amie" begins with "a", which is a vowel, so, it's:

Mon amie.

You should always use 'mon', regardless of the fact that you are addressing to a man or a woman. "Ami" (male) and "Amie" (feminine) In some occasions, to avoid misinterpretations, you can say (verbally and changing the tone) "ma amie"; but this is an exception.

it's mon amie. mon ami, mon amie, mes amis, mes amies. ma cherie oh la la!
yeah, it's mon amie because amie starts with an "a," and you just don't say ma amie. thats wrong, because you would make a contraction with it, and it would end up sounding like "mommy" or something:
m'amie
so it's mon.

Rabbit is right, it's 'mon' all the time because ami(e) begins with a vowel.

There might be cases in poetry, however, where it's contracted to "m'ami(e)," but I don't know of any offhand.

You say "Mon amie" because, even though 'amie' is feminine, it starts with a vowel.

Not offensive, just lacking proper word choice. The way I get these sorts of people to stop saying that is "...Is the internet REALLY gay? How do you know?" in a really ridiculous, slow voice. The person will usually get embarrassed.

I am not answering this question but can I add one thing about this. There is a very famous (and old) French song, "San toi, m'amie". It is translated "Without you, my friend (female)". That's why people thinks it's "ma". Could this be explained?
