I've suffered from trichotillomania for years. When I was 5 I started twirling my hair around my fingers. Sometimes it is worse then others. It is definitely worse when I am stressed out or anxious. I do it to calm down. But sometimes I don't realize I do it.

What really makes me stop for awhile is when I see a picture of myself and my hair looks awful from the short hairs growing in. Other tips, get your hair cut in a short short style, when its short their is less to grab onto and its harder to pull out. If it is pulled back in a bun or ponytail, I am less likely to pull on my hair.

Also just in general decrease your stress in general helps. I have realized that yoga calms me down. Of course she could see a therapist. Because she might have another mental health issue like anxiety or depression.

As for self esteem - a mini makeover boosts my self esteem for a while. A new outfit or two and a new hairstyle. Get dressed up and go out.

Rising From the Tomb (or a Halloween Story with a Happy Ending.) Time does not exist Every now is then God straddles every wall Cohabiting peace with pain. My future MEs and past MEs Stand together On a sacred plain Thus the past rewritten And the balance Can remain, If I learned nothing  else from suffering than this one thing I'll explain My soul is not my body and no crimes  can reach my brain. What once was desperate refuge Becomes a bastion for the sane, And then and now do not exist And are one and the same.

If she has had it for two years and hasn't already tried medication, she needs to. It can be a form of OCD, and OCD meds will often cure or drastically reduce the hair pulling.
(OCD - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). A doc needs to prescribe a good anti-OCD/Anti-depressant.

Learning a musical instrument is very effective. But it`s difficult to motivate.
