being an Australian who has never flown OVER the islands on the way to the mainland, may I suggest that you plan to look at all the islands. my favourite is the big island of Hawaii, you must take a tour to the "black sand beach" its very historical there, I once took a month to go around all the islands, its great. You will find lots of literature on the sites there.

There is a local chain of hotels, they are not new but large clean rooms and reasonably priced. Hawaiian Air should be able to steer you to them. HA also will transport you to all islands. You could buy a package from them, probably cheaper to do this before you leave home.

You must see the volcano on Maui, its a 4am start but well worth it.

Kauai [the garden island] is also worth a look and Molokai definately but check that the airline will book you a ride from airports to hotels on these 2 islands otherwise you could be stranded like I was once.

Really it depends on your likes and dislikes to where you go, it's hard to advise - as I said there is plenty of advice once you are there

have a wonderful time
