They are not a group of people, they are individuals. Are we identifying ourselves this way because we have a 'un'common oppression?

The reason you are called atheist are because you don't believe in God. If you want to know him than seek him out in the bible , start in John! You will find him, the word is clear!

In a technical forums I hit upon myself as a C++/C# GUI guy with a CS history. even as i'm taking section in on-line video games, I hit upon myself as a fighter. On Y!A, i exploit the "AM" because of an rather humorous/stupid protest that change into made many years in the past with assistance from some believer attempting to declare that each and every one atheists on R&S were continuously reporting her solutions/questions and hence were an "atheist mafia". (*Sigh*, the coolest previous days even as many of the regulars, jointly with believers, had a humorousness) except this, I infrequently hit upon myself as an atheist except the question is directed to atheists.

what else would you identify yourself as? any other identification does not reveal your belief or lack of belief in God. Since you're in the Religion and Spirituality section, your atheist ID is the most relevant.

I doubt that being an atheist is the central focus of your life. We are all defined by the things we say, do, and believe. Your religious beliefs, or lack of them, is but a small part of who you are. No one should summarize your entire life and personality by any one aspect of it. If they do, their opinions probably shouldn't matter much to you anyway.

Obviously, your atheism becomes more relevant if you run in religious circles or are involved in spirtual debates. In that case, people are more justified in pigeon-holing you.

We don't. We didn't give ourselves this label, it only exists because theists exist. The word is actually pretty silly and isn't needed. There isn't a word for people that don't believe in Santa Clause. There isn't a word for people that don't believe in ghosts. Why is there a word for people that don't believe in god(s)?

1) There are people in the educational system that teach abiogenisis as fact.
2) Scientists do not claim abiogenisis as fact but hypothesis.
3)I have a right to voice my opinion to expose this but what handle do I use to address these believers of abiogenisis? I have defaulted to atheist but would be happy to change if there is something better.

by that logic, there is no reason Christians, Jews, Pakistanis or Australians have to identify either. They are made up of individuals.

i don't think you have to I.D yourself as atheist all the time. the expression of your beliefs about God are anough to make people see who you are.....nothing odd about you (i think!)
