Not always. Sometimes nothing can take the place of proper medical advice. But if something is stemming from stress, for example, then yes it can probably help. It helps overall for anyone with any problems because you learn to center and calm your mind. Don't pray desperately, but calmly. When you focus on positive, clear your mind of everything and relax, or just pray intently, you will definitely have it carry through into your every day affairs. Start out in the morning (so the feeling can last all day) and at night if you choose (puts your mind at ease for sleep and dreams).
Put simply, positive=positive, calm=calm.
It will definitely improve your mental faculties in many respects to. For me personally, it has sharpened my intellect, ability to think clearly, improved my mood, and boosted my creativity, among many things.
A good way to start meditating is simply focusing on your breathing. Breathe in slowly, hold for 3-4 seconds (you designate how long feels comfortable), and breathe out, holding for the same amount of time. Just focus on that, nothing else. Do not let any thoughts of the day, is this working, etc... wander into your head. Just very simply devote your mind to your breathing. Thats one of the best ways to jump into meditation.
I also recommend yoga. It is very relaxing and beneficial to your health as well.

When you pray, and if the result is not an ignoble deed, then all things are set moving towards its realization; every living thing, every inanimate thing, and the things yet uncreated, are stirred towards bringing into being that which you want. All force begins to be exerted in that direction; all things begin to move toward you. The minds of people, everywhere, are influenced toward doing the things necessary to the fulfilling of your desires; and the work for you, unconsciously.

Doubt and disbelief will ruin your efforts though.
