I would suggest if you can't find the proper place to train a guard dog to go along with "So Much Love"' s suggestion of just getting a large dog. Keep in mind that any large dog will encourage most people to keep away and if you are truly in danger their protective instincts will kick in. I used to have a Great Dane myself which are considered a very gentle breed but to someone who doesn't know you or the dog coming upon it to at night or even in the day is quite unnerving when the dog's eyes are at waist level and it easily weighs over 150lbs. Also keep in mind where you live, many home insurance policies, apartments, & neighborhood associations have breed restrictions on what they consider aggressive breeds. Most guard dogs (doberman, german shepard, rotties, pitbulls, etc) fall under this catagory. Any dog with proper general training is useful. Just being able to teach you dog to bark on command can help in keeping strangers away.

It never hurts to ask, but as I remember it some dogs that the police train never make it as cop dogs, they "flunk" academy but are still wonderful companions. You can ask them if they have any like that. You might also think about other breeds, any large (or small) dog can become a protector with the proper training. Check in your area for training classes and get a book on dog training

This type of dog will need lots of training, don't know if the police will train your dog or sell one of their, they have spent lots of money to train those dogs and it is very expensive. If you have friend who works with those dog, and is also a cop, maybe ask for some tip on how to get your dog trained that way, otherwise you will be spending a lot of time training your dog like they do.

usually if you ask the police dept they will tell you who they use for dog training they almost always find a local place with public access to train their dogs (they certainly wont do it themselves)
