The days are of the week were named after some gods and these god are mostly the Sun,Moon and some of the Great Kings that rule at that time just as there are status of human heads in the money we use today and it's a sign of greatness and to keep the people to remember that there once live a great time when some thing happened and someone live and he was worth to be remembered.

It is suprising that when Christianity reached Europe that no attempt was made to change that, well not successfully. It's the same in other European languages too.....
Maybe the Norse-Germanic tradition was fully rooted in the 5th to 7th century culture, but I doubt it somehow.
