They liked something. = A ellos les gustó algo.
But this is the preterite past tense and is only correct if they liked something at one specific, completed, moment in the past. If they liked something for a while in the past, you need to use the imperfect tense:
A ellos les gustaba algo.

They liked the cat. = A ellos les gustó el gato. OR
A ellos les gustaba el gato.

They liked the cats. = A ellos les gustaron los gatos. OR
A ellos les gustaban los gatos.

But if you are talking about something that JUST happened in the past, the best way to say it would be this:
A ellos les ha gustado algo.
They liked the concert. (one that they just attended tonight) =
A ellos les ha gustado el concierto.
