I read once that until digital cameras get up to 35 mega pixels, the best film is still sharper, is this true?

The Canon 1Ds Mark ll has a 16.7 megapixel sensor. This camera beats color film by a mile - color film only resolves about 8 to 10 megapixels worth of information. Professional 35mm black and white film can resolve up to 25 megapixels.

I'm not sure what Ian is talking about. The 1 Ds Mark ll shoots at 3328x4992 pixels, either RAW or jpg, which at 300 dpi translates to a fantastic 11.1 x 16.6 inch print. A 5 foot poster would degrade... not as badly as 35mm color film, but more than 35mm black and white. (If you want prints this huge, use a medium/ large format camera.)
Koko seems to be attempting some sort of business case. Professional photographers tend to buy the tools they need. If they can get by with a $2000 camera, they'll use that. If they can double their business with an $8000 camera, they'll use that. It's a business expense. Professional wedding photographers can charge +$2500 per day.

No... by a far margin most 16mpix digi's will shoot a far clearer and larger picture. At a normal walmart size any picture is decently clear but you blow something up and digital is the way to go. A 35mm film photo will distort horribly when blown up next to a 16mpix digi's raw format (it would be a good 5 foot tall picture). Search for something with R.A.W. or simply Raw format and you can expand pictures better from that than a jpeg or gif. Anything from 6mpix up should out shoot film when used correctly... Remember though film will always have a "smooth" look to it that gives the illusion of clarity however this same effect can be given to any digi photo on a computer with the most basic of editing programs.

In terms of price for quality film is better than digital just because you have to pay over $4000+ just for a camera for the same quality. But of course digital does beat out film IF you have that $20000 spare change to spend on that 32 MP Hasselbad camera.
