I can't speak for Catholics, but with Mormons, it's between the couple and God. We don't have a "population through procreation" program. My husband and I stopped at two because of my health and our finances. As for being poor, a lot of Mormons live like they are poor, but we practise frugality. Our members are encouraged to spend their money wisely and not live outside their means. We are encouraged to save as much as we can and "waste not, want not". As far as being babysitters, we also teach our children the value and the joy of work. A person, no matter the age, learns to love through service of other people. And finally, I do care what my children feel or think. And my parents cared about me and their parents cared about them. But ultimately a family is not a democracy. The mom and dad are the heads of the household and have the veto power.

Mormons and Catholics are about as similar as Rice and a Black Hole.
I cant speak for the mormons but I can speak for the catholics. The Catholic church is still opposed to birth control. Here in the US its not so much a problem because our culture since the 1960's birth control has been the norm. However in Central and South America where almost everyone is Diehard Catholic there are more people who dont use birth control.
Also I'd Like to ad Catholics in the US are usually more economically stable than protestants. And the situations you speak of happen more among economically depressed protestants that they do in catholics. So, It seems your catholic bashing wont work here.

I would debate you over your last paragraph.
But will explain your first question. For the Mormons they still do almost every ting the old fashioned way by hand which is labor intensive. And needs a large family Base so that ever thing gets done.Just as your preindustrial parents had to do.
For the Catholics it is to keep large amounts of money coming into the church to keep it running. Also the children have to continue paying for any unpaid rites that their forefathers didn't pay before dying. also having to pay to have a Priest pray their family out of Hell.and so on.

First, it is not just Mormons and Catholics, but also Amish, Mennonites, and religious Jews.
Second, people who believe that children are a gift from G-d will always take proper care of their children. Of course, proper care need not include buying the latest electronic toy, a tele in every room, and name brand sneakers for $200 a pair. It means love, shelter, food, and education.
Third, these horrible parents love their children enough to teach them responsibility, to give them chores, in order to be sure that when the children become adults they will be able to hold a job instead of sitting on a fat *** expecting that the world owes them a living.
A child's feelings are considered, but their education is more important. BTW, education consists of more than schooling; it includes learning skills to make you successful in life -- such old-fashioned skills as responsibility, love for family, and respect for other people. when you are waiting for your government dole cheque, the Amish/Mormon/Catholic/Jew from the large family will be working for himself and taking care of his family.

My great-grandmother (Irish Catholic) had 14 kids. She went crazy by 52. I don't even want to talk about the kids. One of which gave up my mother.

They do it cause they can.
But Jesus didn't mean just multiply, he meant also to add, subtract and divide; and he wanted them to learn algebra as well. Later on he told them he wanted them to learn calculus, not realizing that itd hadn't been invented yet. That actually didn't come unto Isaac Newton's time.

I do not know about Mormons, but I was brought up Catholic. Man, those nuns are horrid and mean. They really brainwash you into thinking there is one way and only one way to live life.
