I've always heard this too. (Except I'm not African American) I've asked a few hairdressers so that I could get multiple responses. They all said it is a myth. It just makes it shiny.

No shampoo can ever help to grow hair. It's a myth.

They can make your hair darker, and bushier... if it does not suit you, it might make your hair dry.
