Dog Eat Dog Idealism. The strongest man would own the tree and would only permit his loyalist people to approach the tree until he was usurped for greed and the pattern would then repeat until everyone dies since history repeats itself.

One hell of a bloody war and the collapse of the economy as investors realized what that would due to the value of the dollar. Also, the tree wouldn't last the day.
