I have always wondered whether fructose in fruit puts on weight. I know normal sugar does, but what about fruit sugar? Will eating heaps of it make you gain weight?

Yes it will. If you eat more calories then you burn you will gain weight regardless of where the calories come from. Obviously there are many less calories in a piece of fruit than in a chocolate donut and also the fruit is more healthy because of the fiber and vitamins, but if you eat 3000 calories of fruit a day and only burn off 2500 calories in your daily activities you will gain weight, pure and simple.

Eating loads of any food will make you gain weight if the caloic intake is greater than what you are burning! But the natural sugar in fruits are better for you than junk food because ur body has to change the natural sugar into another form itself!

The primary sugar in fruit is sucrose and a complex polysaccharide. The later sugar(s) is important to health due it's fiber content.

Sucrose is converted to fructose and glucose in the intestine. As a result of this conversion, blood glucose levels increase as well as glucose metabolism. Since one of the paths of glucose metabolism feeds into lipid (fat) metabolism, if one eats very high levels of some fruits, one may tend to gain weight as fat.

Think of it like any other sugar because that is exactly what it is. The reason why fruits are good for you is because of everything else they contain, Vitamins and other nutrients to help you keep healthy. Avoid fruit drinks!! Way too much sugar, nearly as bad as pop.

Sugar, even from fruits, contains calories, too, and if you are not able to metabolize it they are converted to stored energy and consequently gain in weight.

Definitely. Eat them in the morning so you can burn it out. Do not eat sweet fruit, like bananas, grapes, watermelons at night if you are conscious of your weight. Only light meal with no sweet food or sugar at night time.

It shouldn't, because of the fiber in the fruit that moves the fruit on through your system and the sweet in fruit is natural.

fructose is more readily converted to a lipid vs all other sugar types. body compositon/insulin sensitivity will pretty much determine the chances of fat storage occuring.

You would have to eat a LOT of apples at 70 calories each to get fat off of them.

I would like to know too. I eat it for breakfast. Sometimes for desert. I think if you go over your calories it will, and if you are carb sensitive.
