I just found out my 18yo cat Marcus has cancer. He stopped eating 3 days ago. I read in another question that when a cat stops eating for more than 2 or 3 days, he is likely to get hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver syndrome). We are desperately trying to get him to eat something, but we know that even if he starts eating again, he will still have to battle the lipidosis, and then the cancer. We think he is not going to be around much longer. (Does catnip work as an appetite stimulant like marijuana for humans?)

So the question is, what can we do to make him more comfortable in his final days?

And before you ask, yes, if he starts acting like he is in pain, then we will bring him to the vet and put him out of his misery, as hard as that will be. Right now he is resting a lot, drinking some water, and is very weak. He hasn't been complaining a lot though. He is normally a very vocal guy, so I think we'll know when it is time. :-(

I'm so sorry to hear this! First, make sure you give him constant attention at any moment you can, he'll appreciate it and you'll feel good about it too after he's gone. Pet him in any places he favours (behind the ears, under the chin, the tummy, on his spine right before his tail). Keep him warm (or cool depending on where you live).

Give him a lot of variety of foods to choose from. Tuna and other fish are good choices, although our cat really liked chips and doritos, but I've known cats that like bizarre things like cantaloupe. Try blending some soft foods into a paste and mixing it with his water just to get some sustinance into him. You can always give him water through a syringe if he stops drinking too, although he might not like this.

I hope this helps and that things don't get worse - Good Luck

I'm truly sorry that your cat is ill. I had two twenty year old cats and they too stopped eating when they weren't feeling well. Both LOVED Gerber Lamb, Chicken, Beef and Turkey baby food. Why not stop at the store, go to the baby food section and pick up a jar and try spoon feeding Marcus. Don't get the ones with other ingredients mixed in with them such as rice, peas or noodles as the extras might be too much for him. The jar I am currently looking at is Gerber LAMB & Lamb Gravey. It's 2.5 ozs and labeled as a "2nd Foods" (Not sure what that means). My older cats have since passed on but I always have the meat baby food handly incase one of my other animals get under the weather. I hope this helps your cat.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. All I can tell you is to make him as comfortable as possible. Offer him food, whether it be can or dry. Try to coax him to eat, if you can. If he is drinking water, that is good. You might want to consider putting a heating pad on low for him. Cover it up with a towel or little blanket and let him lay on it. This will keep him warm and won't hurt him. You gave him a good home with lots of love and took very good care of him. I don't know of any thing else to tell you right now. Hope this helps out a bit.

I am so sorry. Truly hurts my heart to hear anyone have to go through this. You are right, you will know when. Yes, catnip can encourage eating. Also try baby food, something mild like chicken, mixed with wet cat food, if that doesn't work for him to eat it on his own, use a dropper to get some down him. Or if there is a people food he likes, feed him that. My Tabby loved boiled chicken breasts, so when he got sick and was dying, that's what I made him and that is all he would eat until he stopped that too, I knew then, just as you will. Again, I hurt for you.

Don t wait for the last days. He will suffer. Put him down when he act lifeless and don t want to eat. My cat has cancer and I may have to put her down tomorrow. I ve been torturing myself, thinking I can save her, when in reality I can t. I just lost another cat 2 months ago due to a clot thrown to his legs. I had him put down right away before the suffering and I was heart broken and still am. Now another one with cancer. This is so hard but my vet told me this was going to have to be done. Love her so much and all I do is cry. I have to put my feelings aside and do what s best for my baby! So sad.

I don't really have much to add. i find this so sad. i am a cat lover, and a vet nurse, all the answers people have given are really good. When it is his time to go, it probably won;t be painful, he will find you and rest in peace on your lap, many cats do this, this is where they want to be when they pass, with their loved ones. try not to let him stress out and let him do things he usually isnt aloud to do, like sleep on the kitchen bench, hehehe. Cats love eating out of your dish, so try that too. The food must be smelly, soft, and warm. Good luck and give him a cuddle for me.
I hope he gets better or passes happily.

I am so sorry to hear about your Marcus. I just had to send my Dippers to heaven last week she was also 20 yrs. old and like my little girl. I feel your pain and my thoughts and prays are with you. Best of luck on getting him to eat something. Yes you will know the time as I did. Hardest thing I have ever had to do but I know she is better now and chasing butterflies again.
