Some animals see in color. Color is very important for mating, camoflouge, danger, etc...but scientists who study animal behavior are speculating as to the range of colors animals can perceive. I guess they can dissect their eyes and base this on how many receptors they have.

Some animals lack the photo receptors which science thought was necessary for the animal to see color. But some animals can still distinguish colors even though they lack the receptors. for instance they know the blue dot will give them food and even if you change the position of several dots they will always find the blue dot. With humans we know that the brain sometimes fills in the blanks and will automatically complete the image even if part is missing.

Not all animals are color blind. That they are is an old wive's tale . It has been proven that the majority of animals can see color. Even dogs (carnivors are most often cited as being color blind) have been proved to have an awareness of certain colors. Research is objective in these cases, as well as being subjective by finding that there is a preponderance of rods (which respond to black and white, as well as being more responsive to movement) vs cones (responsive to color) in certain animals eyes.

Actaully we don't know. All we do is guess. Rods and cones...yup just another example of how humans are so quick to guess and assume. Just becuase animals don't have the same amount as humans that is why they can't see color. Or can they and we just assume they can't. I can't see what other animals are seeing and neither can anyone else.

We know about rods and cones in the eye and how they see color. Some animals don't have both rods and cones
