Best can mean different things to different people.

Best in terms of money is no object? Hasselblad makes a very fine medium format 32 megapixel camera that gives absolutely stunning results at absolutely stunning prices ($25-30k for a full kit w/lens).

Best in terms of what the average person can afford? Well if you're looking for a dSLR I would agree with the other board posters that Canon, Nikon, Sony (the Minolta line they just bought) and Pentax all offer very capable dSLR's and a fine array of lenses.

If it's point and shoots there are a number of models from Fuji, Panasonic, Canon, and Olympus that return very nice results.

Remember, most of these cameras use the same CCD's (which is the part that captures the image) which are typically made by Sony.

The key is to find a camera that feels good in your hands with logically laid out controls. A lot of folks will tell you to get the latest, biggest, fastest, but in reality if you're just shooting snapshots and not enlarging them beyond 8x10 in size any of the names listed above will take more than adequate pictures.

If you're looking to do semi-pro to pro level work then you should begin to look at the top offerings from Canon/Nikon that will run you $5k plus.

Canon for quality and professional use.

For general use and constant great shots, unquestionably I will point to the Casios. The Pentax was my favorite camera with films, and was pleased that their digital cameras worked just as beautifully. and guess what, it can get wet. Thats a big plus.
The Nikon is dissapointing. and the Olympuses look pretty.

There are many many brands that are not name brands but they give beautiful pictures. So choose ease of use, type of battery and lots of megapixels.

good suggestion from Lem. SLR cameras do no longer have Zoom like a level and shoot digital camera. SLR's use 2 sorts of lenses and many diverse focal legths. those are fastened focal length lenses and zoom lenses. Zoom lenses can determination from huge perspective lenses like a 10-22 mm or lengthy telephoto zooms like a 100-400mm. Now what lens will provide you the zoom determination you want relies upon upon what you're taking pictures. maximum DSLR's include a lens it truly is often an 18-55mm lens. this can take you from huge perspective to mild telephoto. below is a itemizing of lenses for diverse topics. a number of those lenses will value you as a lot or more effective than your digital camera body yet there are frequently ideas in a great number of value levels. panorama = huge perspective 10-22 mm snap shots = 50mm about. The kit lens will be effective for this or you could bypass with a 50mm fastened focal length lens. activities = Telephoto 100-400mm. there are countless lenses which could be used for this. a nicely-loved lens is a 70-300mm zoom flora and fauna = Very lengthy telephoto lenses four hundred-800mm. those lenses are very intense priced and the majority do no longer personal those except they do a great number of flora and fauna pictures. After possessing your digital camera for a lengthy time period you'll understand more effective what you'll favor.

I would recommend the Canon brand highly. I own both the Rebel XT and XTi; I am pleased with both. I would suggest you go to a camera store and try out all brands. How does it feel in your hands? Is there room for advancement with this camera? (Can you buy other lenses, filters for it) Don't settle for one that might be less than what you want just because you can't afford it. Save up. Put one in lay a way. But, don't settle for one that you'll be unhappy with later on. Good luck! When you find the one you want, check it out on DPreview.com and see what they have to say about it.

Overall quality would be Canon for comsumers. For more SLR and prosumer level Canon and Nikon go neck and neck. Sony is just sorta hanging out there.

I'd give my vote to Canon. Nikon and Sony would also be in the running, though.
