Kittens do it for social order. Older cats do it for attention or aggression. Biggest bitter and who gives up first is the top of the pack. Important for you to push away bitter to establish you are in charge.

Affection is expressed with rubbing up against you.

Oh yeah, ours chases us around the house and "attacks." It's just instinct and play aggression, he doesn't bite too hard. He just wants us to chase him back and play. If you can get another cat for him to play with that will probably cut down on the behavior.

Also, also play with him with toys - not your hands. You don't want to further encourage biting skin. We use the feather on the wand toy (DaBird) which he goes bonkers for.

Out cat is very active and enjoys lots of toys and he loves the cubes (see this):

He runs in and out of the cubes and we use DaBird toy which he loves to chase in & out of them and this playtime reduces his desire to stalk us. :) I also throw some kitty balls inside the cubes which he can bat around. He has a kitty condo which was a smart investment, bc he climbs up & down that thing all day long and takes naps in the top perch-area.

I had a cat for 12 years named prince. he used to bite people on the leg, jump off the top of doors on their heads, wait for you under your covers to attack, and sit in front of you and dare you to move....he wasnt affectionate, he wanted revenge. I figured it out when my family was talking about it one day. one made a mistake and sat on him while he was on the couch, someone else stepped on his tail and so on. he would not get you at that moment,he would always get you later. so check and see if you have a cat thats out for revenge.

In college one of my house mate's cats would chomp on my leg once in a while for no reason at all. I never did figure it out. He was very nice most of the time.

haha!... We had an old siamese male cat that used to bite us on the heel if we didnt reach down and pet, scratch or rub his head...
He would run after us and nip our heels.. As soon as we bent down to give him effection, he was fine and saundered off..
so as to answer your question.. maybe yes,, maybe its a "cat" thing... haha

When my cat was a kitten it would actually pretend I'm prey and hunt me. Fun for him.... not so much for me.
So your cat might just be using you for fun/learning.
