I had a full time job for 9 months, then got a freelance job in which I have to file a 1099 form. Do I have to file a 1040a for my full time, then a 1099 separately for my freelance job? And what about for state taxes? Do I need to file 2 forms for state? I'm confused, please help!

No, you file one return for federal and one for state, showing all of your income.

For federal, you'll file a 1040 instead of a 1040A, and will also have a schedule C or C-EZ to show your 1099 income and any associated deductible expenses, and a schedule SE to figure your self-employment tax. Numbers from the bottom of the schedules C and SE will transfer to your 1040.

State depends on the state, you might or might not have to file any extra forms, but you'll show the income from both your W-2 and your 1099 for the state also.

Your 1099 income should be reported on Schedule C, and then put on "other income" on the 1040.

You also report 1099 income to the state. I don't know the form you would use (as I don't know your state), but go to the franchise tax board site for your state to find out.

I think you have to file one 1040 and report both things in the right places on that form plus any additional forms that go with it.
