Over the past 40 days I have found myself craving huge amounts of fluids 24 hours a day. I have no problem consuming several gallons of water, a gallon of juice and a gallon of milk a day! The only side effect is going to the bathroom every 45 minutes. I feel healthy and I've lost several inches off my waist. Is this a medical or mental issue?

i have actually heard of this...your symptoms are that of a type of diabetes...Diabetes insipidus.

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is an uncommon condition that occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water as they perform their function of filtering blood.

DI caused by a lack of ADH, antidiuretic hormone, is called central diabetes insipidus. When DI is caused by failure of the kidneys to respond to ADH, the condition is called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. The major symptoms of diabetes insipidus are excessive urination and extreme thirst. The sensation of thirst stimulates patients to drink large amounts of water to compensate for water lost in the urine.

Central diabetes insipidus is caused by damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland as a result of surgery, infection, tumor, or head injury.

The doctor will give you an injection of the ADH that your body can't produce.

If this is the case with you, you need to see a doctor right away. answer this...

Do you have excessive thirst for ice water or other liquids? ex-you can't go without drinking for more then an hour.

Do you have excessive urinary volume?

Have you had a head trauma?

The same thing happened to me last year. I was drinking gallons of water every day, a quart at a time. I was working as a personal trainer, so I thought it was just from that. A couple of months later, I got sick. I was found to have diabetes - type I. That was the end of personal training for me. It's taken months to recover.
I have childhood-onset diabetes, or insulin dependent, but I had been living healthy enough for so long as to mask the symptoms.
It's a health issue that affects your mentality very much. Take a good look at it from both sides.

It's mental..but could become medical. There was a woman who died recently in a challenge to win a Nintendo Wii for drinking the most water. She drank 5 gallons. And died. That doesn't happen every day. Water is good for you. But if you consume to much. Your body can't absorb it fast enough. and it back washes into your system carrying harmful contaminants. Which could make you feel like your drunk. Just by drinking water

Umm, are you overweight?

You may tend to drink the water as you know it assists in losing weight.

After you drink 3 litres of water a day it is just unhealthy.

Im Australian so i dont know how much a gallon is but 3 litres is 12 cups.

NEVER drink more than 12 glasses of water a day. No more than 4 glasses of juice a day. And if you include cerial about 3 glasses of milk a day.

So in a day i suggest 5 glasses of water 2 glasses of juice and 2 glasses of milk. Juice has water and you take in water from the food you eat..

Good Luck!

You have to squeeze meals in there somewhere. You need more vitamins and minerals that fluids just aren't a good source of. Yeah it will help you lose weight, but you can also get deficiencies. But as long as you're eating healthy along with it and getting some exercise it's really not that much of a problem.

Not sure of the reason, but be careful. You may have already heard of the woman in CA who died from drinking two gallons of water in one day. Not an internet hoax. It is called hyperhydration. 8-12 glasses of water a day, thats it...

I HIGHLY recommend you get your blood sugar checked ASAP!
My aunt went through some EXTREME thirst a couple of years ago... she could not keep moisture in her mouth no matter how much she drank. Turns out she had developed diabetes and was close to having a diabetic coma.

Extreme thirst is one of the symptoms... so get yourself checked as soon as possible!

Is there a point to this bigotry? Or would you be equally in favour of allowing only homosexual sexual activity, since who you choose to diddle is apparently not a civil right? "As a side note I think it is completely shameful when people try to co-opt the the struggle the black people went through in this country and equate them to the "gay struggle" how dare you?" More shameful than people being denied their Constitutional rights? You obviously have a completely skewed perspective of what is shameful.

This addiction is very serious. You need to get help immediately or risk death. You can alter your electrolytes so dramatically that you could get very ill and die. If you can, you should stop now and go to a hospital near you. This is definitely a psychological issue with serious medical consequences.

That doesn't sound good... lotsof fluid intake and output is a symptom of diabetes....I AM NOT A DOCTOR, but it might be a good idea to go see one. They can assess the situation much better than i can
