Actually, Jews say it is 5767 years old, and we count it from the approximated time of "Adam and Eve." Of course we don't really know how old the world is, but we do have to count from somewhere.

If one starts with the birth of Jesus, around 2 or 3 BC which is recorded in a number of ancient history books (whether or not the historians believed He was the Christ), one can start in Genesis and read the precise genealogies that describe when a son was born to someone and how old the father was when his son was born, one can build a timeline that begins somewhere around 4000 BC.
Here's a place to start - it includes a chart from Adam to Noah:

Here's another with a more complete tiemline on 4 pages.

Jews and Christians base their belief on a 6000 year old earth upon the historical Biblical record.
The Bible takes man and the earth back that far with a degree of accuracy.

People get confused between the creation of the universe and the creation of man.
The current year on the Hebrew calendar counts from Adam (the creation of man in his current state).
