he needs to increase his water intake because water will help loosen his secretion and sputum and he needs to be able to expectorate his phlegm effectively. if it's a dry cough then he shouldn't try to expectorate because it will tear his tissues in the throat because it's dry. if it's not dry cough then he needs an expectorant like ventolin syrup, it will make him cough more but in such a way that it gets all the phlegm out. but if it's a dry cough then he needs an antitussive like vick's formula 44 syrup, which will reduce his coughing episodes. he also needs to take in vitamin C because it will help speed up his healing. a lot of water will really help because a coughing person is prone to dehydration. if he has fever then he might need antibiotics which should be prescribed by his doc. these antibiotics will directly act on the microorganisms that has infected your dad's upper or lower airway causing the inflammation making him cough. do remember that antibiotics should be taken for as long as the duration as the doc prescribed even after your dad starts to feel better because it is amount of time needed to completely kill those microbes.

Garlic really clears the chest but I suggest you go to your local pharmacist and ask him to make up his own special linctus - it is not on the shelves but the old fashioned stuff that really gets into the dampness on the chest and clears the coughing. They do this in UK. in the old fashioned style chemist shops.
