First of all to add to the knowledge of that lady out ther - "Muslim"
As per 2001 census in India the ratie of female born is 933 per ever thousand males which is a healthy ratio. You cannot expect an exact 50/50 ratio, can you?
Secondly, donot claim about other scriptures which you haven't read by yourselves. You have no idea what Bible and the Hindu scripts have to say about marraiges, do you?
As far as your question is concerned friend, in India every religion is given equal freedom. Ther is no imposition made on religions unless extremely necessary. Peopl are free to follow there religions their way. Hence India allows Muslim males to marry 4 times, it allows sikhs to carry 'kirpian', etc.
The same privileges are given to muslims in all muslim countries.

In other nations also the limit is up to four.
Islam is one of the rare communties which is still traditional. Having four wives is one thing and keeping them satisfied in matrimony is something different. I mean think of the plight of the husband when he has to deal with the wives who will mostly be jealous of each other.
If a man takes another wife it is usually done for the lust of more sense gratification or power etc. Traditionally the kings used to console themselves with the thought that it is for a heir or simply prestige. However, it still did foster a community for all it's discrepencies. These days there are so many nuclear families which are getting dysfunctional because of lack of relegious background in it's structure.

One lady called 'Muslim' gave a lengthy explanation on this topic, citing various sources. But she gave a misinformation on Christianity. She mentions that nowhere in the Bible it is mentioned that a man should have only one wife. I beg to differ and offer this quotation from the Scriptures.
Passage 1 Timothy 3:12:
Deacons (Leaders) must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.

Muslims are allowed to have four wives. Now when it comes the law of the particular land they live in they have to obey that. Still to be fully honest with you, many find a way around it.
