Engineers are the backbone of any countries infra-structure. They are behind of our every daily need...from utilities, building infrastuctures, transportation, electronics, textile industries, etc. The tragic part of the engineering field..i.e. for engineers, they are not recognised. But the truth is, if we think deeply, there are millions and millions of engineering brains behind this system. For example, when I wake up in the morning to light up a bulb, there is one electrical engineer who is calculating the power loads for my area. When i put my dress for work, the machines used to weave my fabric is also invented by an textile engineer. And then I use my car to get to my office. There are plenty of mechanical engineers who have worked to improve the performance of engines. These are some simple examples. But if you think deeply there every type of engineers who are trying to improve our lives just like any other professions. But the sad thing is, we forget those who are behind the scene. Please remember these hard workers.

I think a large part of the problem is that most people have no clue what an engineer actually does or all the different things around them that are engineered. Thus I think educating the public about engineering would be a first good step.

Also, in the civil field, many people think that they know more than the engineer. This happens when they see something that doesn't make sense to them on the micro scale, but on the macro scale, where the engineer also has to make things work, it does.

Farah is exactly right. Another reason that our image is basically neutral is that we as engineers do not trumpet our success. Other more flamboyant people get the credit, most notably, the architect. They are good at public relations and we structural engineers are not.

That has to change.
