Islam allows a man to marry UPTO...not necessarily FOUR wives
"IF HE CAN TREAT ALL OF THEM AND THEIR CHILDREN EQUALLY" This is a very strich and basic condition. If one can not treat all the 4 wives equally in eveything he is not allowed to marry more than one. This is Islamic Philosophy. The followers take the wrong way. Thats is not the mistake of Islam.

In India every rich man has one wife and 5 mistresses.
innumerable girls with whom he had ,had sex.
But poor and middle class are caught and punished.
To prevent this & to be honest ,provision is given.But no one need to marry four times.
How many muslims you know have married four wives? and How many rich Hs & Ms, have four or more women in cubes? Do you know?
In other countries, only one wife is allowed but the court grants easy permission for the second, strict about third and fourth.
As in India we cannot expect such a lineancy, people rather have this provision always.,then going around producing illegal innocent children.

Islam allows men to take up to 4 wifes, yes, but there are conditions.. it says in the Quran (like the muslims bible) that God allows up to 4 wives, but you must be equal in every aspect to them (ie: seperate housing, financing, marital evening rights etc) and becuase God knows all, he knows men cant be fair, so he says to only choose one then and be good to her. .. So really in most muslims countries, you'll only see a man taking only 1 wife.. and in todays economy, no one can afford more than 1.. its to expensive to house more than one.. GEEZ with the cost of living.. haha! and the womens lib movement, muslim women are getting wise and the men dont want to come home to two complaining wives... haha! one is enough. .. There are reasons also in Islam as to why God allowed this, but I wont go into it here, not enough space

Indian Muslims are backward. They marry and divorce at will. Second marriage in other Islamic countries is prohibited unless one is capable of looking after both wives( even three/four).
