My friend just called and she said that she just drank a 4 fl oz container of grape Triaminic Night Time Cold & Cough bottle. I don't know if she is going to be ok, I can't find anything on the net. It doesn't sound like to much though, does anyone know what to expect? Is she going to get high, will nothing happen, or will she have to go to the hospital? Please help, I need to call back really quick if something is going to happen.

Call your local posion control center immediately. In the US, that would be 1-800-222-1222.

In 4 fl oz of purple Triaminic there are about 148 mg of diphenhydramine, and 59 mg of phenylephrine.

The recommended adult dose of diphenhydramine is 50-100 mg (it varies by country), but people sometimes take it recreationally at doses as high as 450 mg. With high doses people describe hallucinations, and other indications of being "high." It's not ideal, and she shouldn't have taken it, but it will pass and she won't have any lasting damage from that one.

The normal adult dose of phenylephedrine is 10 mg. One of the possible symptoms of an overdose on phenylepherine is coma, but I haven't been able to find out anything about what the maximum safe dose is. There's not as much information on phenylephedrine around because it doesn't actually work as a decongestent, so it's only started showing up in cold medicines since various states have started placing restrictions on the sale of pseudoephedrine. Triaminic used to contain pseudoephedrine, but switched to phenylephrine last year (so it it was really old Triaminic then she got pseudoephedrine instead, but I have no idea how much since the old formula isn't listed anywhere).

I think she should definitely go to the hospital ASAP, considering the possible effects of an overdose of phenylephrine. I'm also kind of concerned about why she took in the first place. Was she trying to kill herself? Or was she trying to get high off the antihistamine? Either way, it's definitely worth looking into.

4 ounces is not that much more than a recommended dose for anyone 12 and over. Look at it this way.. A can of Pepsi is 12 ounces, so 1/4 that and that is how much she took...She will probably get the same effect she might normally get from cough medicine. She might get light-headed, or very sleepy. She should be just fine... Why would she call to tell you that? Maybe she is feeling sad or lonely and couldn't think of a better way to get your attention?

hard to say...the best thing you could do is yes...to check up on her and maybe physically be there and examine her ..othherwise call the hospital...some people can tolerate huge amounts of drugs depending on what type and also depending on their body's resilience...but since the drug she drank is liquid....chances are she is ok (because commonly in most cases liquids are not as strong as the pills)but just to be very sure check up on her or consult an expert or someone who knows about the anatomy of the human body because there are cases when a person is completely fine until a couple of hours when their body breaks down from strong concentrations of certain chemicals

you could call the local poisen control center and they will answer that question. That is what it is for. If it will harm her than you have every right to call an ambulance for her or call her parents. Do the right thing, rather be safe than sorry.

I would call her back and ask her why she told you that she drank the cold medicine and if she has a cold.

I would ask her if she is sick, lonely or hungry or tired.
I would ask her what her views are on suicide.

Then I would be blunt with her and tell her If you are going to do stupid things, don't call me and worry me about it, I am concerned about your well being. Do you need to tell me something??? Do you have a will, is there someone I need to contact? Do you want to end your life ........do I need to call 911 for you? or do you need Chicken Soup and tea and toast???
