Have an incomplete 2003 Cannondale Jekyll that is missing the parts listed above. What would you recommend I replace them with? Front derailleur is a Shimano XT. LX cassette. Not looking for anything overly expensive (in fact, I would prefer to go browsing on eBay). I would love to hear some ideas!

ebay is one of the best places to buy bike parts - i buy a ton of crap there and i dont even need it, just because its cheap.

it really depends on your style of riding. if you just do light trail riding, then go with shimano Deore. total MSRP is around $110 and will go on ebay for maybe $75

personally, i use LX and recommend that for most riders. msrp is around $200 but it will be much cheaper on ebay.

you only need XT if you really like to abuse your bike or need something lightweight (weight savings from LX to XT are not that substantial) XT will cost $300 easily

if you have alot of cash layin around, get XTR. ive never riddin it, but everyone i know who has says it is well worth the money. msrp $500 and up

a word of advise: dont rush into buying something. if the price is higher than you were planning to pay, wait a while, a better deal will come around. i was looking to upgrade my deore RD to an LX (to match the rest of the components) and everywhere on ebay it was at least $45. ive been looking for about a month and i just bought one for $23. great deal. just be patient.

good luck

You will have to spend money on shifters, they rarely are a good deal - even on eBay. XT is the best, I think, you can get a combo which is shifter and brake lever in one - really light and lasts forever. That's unless you prefer grip shifters. Rear der should be XTR - once you try it you'll never go back. As far as cranks - Race Face. Extremely stiff and light. XTR rear der and cranks can be won on Ebay for $30/$80, otherwise $80/$200 retail.

Spend your dough on a good crank: LX is what I have and love it. Dont spend the $$ for the XT or XTR since they are for truly hard-core riders. The Rear derailler I have is XT and it rocks, but a lesser one will do fine. Shifters are a personal choice...go to a bike shop and try some out.

I prefer SRAM myself they are a good company, bike parts are their only products as opposed to shimano who makes fishing and other products. I see allot of bikes everyday and believe me if you have to use shimano stay away from the LX they are the orphan of the line the best of the bunch is the XT you really get what you pay for it is a true work horse. as for cranks the new Race Face or FSA are good as is the new XT.you should be able to find some good prices on line

ok screw ebay and screw shimano lx. For that bike either get Shimano XT or XTR and go for a Sram cassette, i have one matched with my shimano stuff and it works just fine and Sram rocks anyway. Shifters ive heard great things about Sram but never tried them. I have a rear der. thats XT that rocks..

You'll get lucky in EBAY when it comes to COOL DEALS----though there are great bargains in Blue Sky Cycling's website---www.blueskycycling.com or Wheel World ( check their cranks and shifters from SRAM or Shimano). Price Point has fantastic bargains too ( www.pricepoint.com )---the rear derailleurs there are SWEET------
