Hello there...

I have a small question for all of u folks who perform blood draws by syringes....when u draw the patient's blood and proceed to empty the syringe in the test tube...when the syringe is emptied, are there any traces of blood left on the inner walls of it or it looks like it hasnt been used before? So basically, can a nurse not realize that she had used this syringe before?

The reason am asking is coz I went for a blood draw today and I wasnt paying attention so I didnt notice the nurse unwrap a needle...all I saw is her holding the needle and sticking it in my vein..I looked at the needle before she used it and it looked perfectly clean...

yes to your question. i am an ALS EMT witch is advanced life support i am not a doctor yet. syringes will leave a small amount of blood in it after the blood is removed. and it is common practice to put the syringes or needle in a red bag or box, that is marked for the needles.
you have nothing to worrie about.

The standard is to dispose of the used (contaminated) syringe/needle combo in a sharps container immediately after. I wouldn't think anyone wants to risk law suits for cross contamination of the sample and all the supplies are one patient use. However the use of a syringe instead of a standard vacutainer is odd, I only used syringe on difficult sticks. Now if they used a Vaccutainer Hub (the thing that holds the needle and the tube is pushed in to draw blood, then it is reusable because the needle and blood don't touch the vaccutainer. You just swap out a new needle and do the stick. Hope this makes sense :)

Each syringe is disposed of in the sharps container after every patient.
