No, they're not wrong. What is even worse is while I was teaching elementary science classes, a student informed me that the author of a book was wrong (the book stated the Earth formed 4. someodd years ago) He said he knew this because his preacher told him it was 6,000 years old.
The four fields of science you listed are not wrong. The 4,000-6,000 whatever fairly tale is not right. If God exists, he is not to blame for all the deception.....it is some of the church-goers shoving that stuff down people's throats.

Time is an interesting thing. Einstein proved that time is different from one place to another, including various points on Earth. Time on top of Mt. Everest is not the same at the deepest part of the oceans. So there is quite a bit of evidence that the universe is billions of years old, but time has little relevance outside our universe. God is unlimited in time.
In Genesis it states "there was evening and then there was morning, the first, second, etc... day." How can evening to morning be a day? It sounds backwards, right? That's because in the original Hebrew the word for "evening" is also translated "chaos" and the word for "morning" can also be translated "order".
Also, if you take the Genisis account of creation and compare it to how science has established how the universe and life came to be, the order is very similar. Nothing into something, vapor and gas into mass, galaxies and then planetary systems, water and simple compounds, then simple life forms, complex life, more complex life. Then God "breathes" life (a soul) into what is now man. This is substantiated by both science and a writing from thousands of years ago.
God and Science do not contradict each other. They prove each other. Is the universe approximately 16 billion years old? That's probably right. Could God have created this universe in 6 days? In God's time frame, absolutely. All I know is that God was there to make it happen.
Another thing. A law of physics states that something cannot come from nothing. The odds of this happening are beyond astronomical. A law of quantum physics states that if an event is, by scientific odds, too improbable to occur, it cannot occur.
Maybe your belief that the universe came about beyond astronomical odds and laws of physics proves you have more faith than you think.
Science without Religion is lame. Religion without Science is blind. - Albert Einstein

All fields agree that the order in which The Earth was created had to happen in the order described in the Genesis account. Now think about the level of technology and scientific advancement not available to the people of that day. Every other society was claiming that a lotus blossom or a cow did it. Before anybody ever cared, The Bible said the Earth is round and hangs on nothing. To every other society the thought was ridiculous. The Bible is not trying to be a science text book. It's facts though, are scientifically accurate.
From what I've seen, scientists are still modifying their theories and what is said in the Bible was seen by someone. Someone had to dictate those events. The accuracy is undeniable and speaks for itself.

I'm not going to argue with you, dear ex neighbour of mine; I'm merely going to say that I happen to think you're focus is on the wrong thing. I, as a Christian, could honestly care less how old the Earth is. The truth is no one really knows. Even amongst Christians, that's one of the things we can agree to disagree upon.
I think most people tend to put so much emphasis on the things that can never be answered, and that make no real difference in this lifetime that they miss the urgency of what IS important, and that is that the message of the Bible is twofold. We all are sinners, and we must have our sins forgiven, if we are to enter into spiritual communication with God both in this world and in the world once we step into eternity. That's a very answerable question as to HOW do we rectify ourselves to God. The other more important answers come to you once you are reinstated with your Heavenly Father. Not to say we have all the answers; we DON'T. But once this issue is settled; you have a LOT less questions; cause things make a whole lot more sense.
EDIT:
Dear Uncle Wayne...
Once again I challenge you, A supposed Baptist preacher (which I HIGHLY doubt) (not what you're saying here) to give me Chapter and verse where it talks about hominids in the Word of God. It's NOT there, my friend!!!!

NASA recently reported that the Universe is 13.7 Billion years old, and the Earth is 4.5 billion years old. Paleontologists say that 550 million years ago there was an explosion of life on Earth, the Cambrian Era.
The Bible does not deny that there were hominids before, during, and after the Garden of Eden show. There are 10 places in the Bible where the people from Adam's bloodline met, fought with, intermingled, and married people of non Adam's bloodline.
Ergo: People, back then, knew there were "non-Adam" humans. Why do people today ask the question "Who did Cain marry??"
PS: I am a self-read Christian. I am also left-handed. How is it possible for a person to be both left-handed and a Christian?

No they don't. Generally they believe that scientists have an ulterior motive for driving their religion and their god out of the mainstream of society. And here's why. They can't understand the science. Most of the well-educated leaders of the ID or creationist movement aren't trained in the field that they work in. Many others only have degrees from degree mill institutions. They engage in routine disinformation. They don't do peer-reviewed research. They quote-mine (take quotes out of context, often from very reputable PRO-EVOLUTION sources), often repeating the same debunked quotes for decades without ONCE checking the "facts". The people who rely on these people for leadership are discouraged from and expected not to question but to believe as they do in their dogma. Their motto is "JUST BELIEVE". Of course when it comes to science their motto becomes "JUST DIS-BELIEVE". EDIT: Shortcake, your assertion is a LIE. EDIT: kjv_gods_word: EINSTEIN was a creationist? That's an OUTRAGEOUS LIE. Einstein was an atheist! He said so himself many times. Your appeal to authority doesn't alter the facts of the matter - Creationism is a lie.

To be honest, I can't prove either way. I just have faith that things make sense in the end, and I will find out then, because I have seen and felt God's pressence in my own life, and I cannot deny what I have felt, so I choose not to worry about things that I cannot prove. If you really want an answer, just consider that we used to think that diamonds took thousands of years to form, and now we can form them in labs in brief periods of time. That fact is enough to let me know that we do not currently know all the laws of nature and that I shouldn't let that destroy my knowledge of what I do know.
