I'm not sure how long your face has been oily. I work at a certain department store and have friends in the cosmetics department. They all say that some people with very oily skin usually under moisturize, by doing that it causes your skin to over produce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Try moisturizing with a well balanced moisturizer, like Laura Mercier moisturizing cream. Try washing your face with something made for combination skin, make sure the soap doesn't leave any type of residue, that can cause grease too. If you wear foundation or make up, try using a primer over your moisturizer, it creates an extra barrier between your skin. Laura Mercier makes a great one called Nourishing Foundation Primer. Go to the department store and ask for samples, remember if they don't give you samples just buy it...you can always return it!! Good luck!

I just went to the doctor yesterday and asked the same question. Her reply: STOP DRINKING SODA! I've used pills, medical creams and ointments, over the counter crap, etc. and of course, nothing has worked for me. I was even thinking of trying ProActive Solution you see on TV. But anyways, the doc said if I lay off the soda completely, my skin will start to improve. I used to have acne extremely bad but now it went down a lot. My only problem area is around my mouth. One other thing I do to keep my skin dry (I have oily skin): I go tanning a few times a week. This dries out my pores and has cleared up about 95% of my skin. And the benefit...you look great! The only bad thing is it greatly increases chances of skin cancer, and it's a pretty expensive treatment for acne. It's a win or loose situation, I guess. But that's what works the best for me so far. Now I will try to lay off the soda and see how much that helps. Hope this was some what useful. Good Luck!

I also suffer from that affliction (and to those who don't have it, they don't understand that it IS an affliction!)

I have a favorite website that has gone a long way towards educating me on my various skin woes, and they sell quality products (tried and true) which seem to make a discernable difference.

Go to www.dermadoctor.com and do a search by skin condition. Not only will you find articles containing a wealth of information you can actually use, they will recommend products for you that would be most helpful.

You may also want to try a makeup called dermacia. (Maybe you've seen the infomercials?) Go to www.dermaciatv.com or do a google search on dermacia cosmetics.

One thing I would caution you: It is extremely tempting to launch into alot of really harsh products (astrigents and such) that can have a rebound effect and actually make your skin more oily. Stay away from products which are overdrying - this will only irritate your skin and stimulate it to produce more oil. Try to keep your skincare routine simple: Completely remove all makeup with Oil of Olay facial wipes (preferably for sensitive skin), and then use a mild exfoliating cleanser, following up with a moisturizer or lotion that contains ingredients to inhibit oil production. Definitely use makeup which is oil free....

Remember diet, exercise, how much water you drink all play a significant role in how your skin functions and appears. In fact, your skin can be the first indicator of overall health. Avoid food or drinks high in iodine/iodide (like shellfish, health foods containing kelp or carageenan, energy drinks like Dr. Enuf). Also avoid food/drinks high in acidity, like pickles or orange juice made from concentrate. (Oranges themselves seem to be fine, but I'm talking about processed fruit juice.) Walk briskly everyday, drink at least 8 glasses of water every day, and ditch drinks like soda, sweet tea or coffee which are high in stimulants or have a diuretic effect.

If you are able to, either use tissue paper blotting pads, or wash your face and reapply makeup in the middle of your day. The latter option isn't usually very practical, but it can be refreshing on the days you have something special going on where you want to look especially fresh and nice.

Remember that this may be a long term problem, so look for solutions that are actually permanent, lifestyle adjustments (like eating right and exercising) as opposed to some temporary and ultimately inefficient "quick fix".

Wishing you all the best -

My face used to be horribly oily and I tried to dry it out with mud masks and drying cleansers when all I ever needed was a good moisturizer. I know it sounds counter-productive, but it turns out that my skin was oily because I kept drying it out more and more and it overcompensated for the lack of moisture. I use Clean & Clear Dual Action moisturizer because it helps prevent my skin from getting too oily and it helps clear up my acne, too. If you shop for a moisturizer, make sure it doesn't clog pores and is made specifically for facial use.
