Go to ancestry.com. They have message boards consisting of messages written by thousands of genealogy buffs who can provide information you wouldn't believe. You will have to search through the various name menus before you finally get to your surname however. Through that website, I was able to find a message written by a woman about one of my great-grandfathers, who was an early settler in Austin, Texas, which quotes an Austin newspaper article which described his sudden death in 1902 and lists his survivors. Among them were my grandmother and several greataunts and greatuncles whose names I recognized. The same message also traced said great-grandfather's lineage back all the way to Connecticut in the early 1700's. It gave place names, dates, and even the names of numerous great to the nth grandparents who I didn't even know existed. Through them I also learned that our family is probably related to a second president, Rutherford B. Hayes, the other definitely being LBJ, because LBJ's great-grandfather was one of my g-g-g-grandfather's younger brothers. Hayes' middle name is a variant of the aforementioned great-grandfather's surname, and his mother came from the same town in Connecticut from which my great-grandfather's family hailed.

google your last name and the word surname. You should turn up some info about the last name.

Ancestry.com is the best site I've found for getting information.
