there's nothing immoral about commanding some 5 time loser to sacrifice his little baby son, is there? god said it, so it must be moral. Those two Levantine tribal women who were going to chop a baby in half ..... the big moral resolution for that one was zero-sum custody (one parent got the kid 100%time and the other had no visiting rights). The morals of the iron age did not extend to notions of collective parenting. It's not immorality so much as immature ethial reasoning

It was a while ago (a really long while ago, I'm old and I was 14 at the time).... but take a look at a book called "The Harlot by the Side of the Road." It really discusses the immorality of bible stories quite nicely.

Don't know mr dr strangelove.
But when I read the part about the woman who was defending her husband by grabbing his enemy's balls, I pretty much lost faith in the legal system. I'm so glad I live in the modern age. That was harsh to lose her hand because she was trying to defend him in the only way she knew how

Then I read the part about never breaking a bent reed, and I thought: that Isaiah guy was a poet.

When I was a little kid, I just thought it didn't make any sense. But I think the fact that we're exposed to these stories from the time we're kids accounts for the fact that we tend to accept them without even questioning the "morality."

While I was raised Catholic and took religion classes for years, though never actually believed any of it, I didn't start truly analyzing the Bible until around 17, at which time I was duly disturbed.
