I am shocked that schools let people graduate with such an atrocious misuse of the english language! I know some of it is "internet-speak", but a lot of it is just plain ignorance!

goes to show how the degrade of the family and the home life has taken effect on all we know. and to think....these kids will be running the country when we are in the retirement home....that is even more scary.

I absolutely agree. It's pathetic that people are leaving school now with only half an education, but more and more schools are focusing on the vocational aspect of life. It is more important to high schoolers now to ply a trade than to know how to speak eloquently and it's heartbreaking. My boyfriend is 21 years old and can't spell. I'm not kidding, the man spells shower, "shawer," and doesn't realize it's wrong. It isn't so much that schools are 'letting' kids graduate like this as encouraging them to graduate this way. Sad.

Steph, you can't assume that all lthe people who use Yahoo Answers graduated from school, are from english-speaking countries, and can write proper english.

There are a lot of young people who use this site who are still in school and or not educated at alll. But that shouldn't stop them from using this site for answers or fun.

Yahoo Answers is also international so yes, there are a lot of people who cannot speak english.

As for the rest - well - that's what makes us all different. Proper grammar and spelling just simply do not come into priority in their lives. Can we judge them? No, but yes it can be very frustrating. For one, it is very hard to understand them!

School can only teach - but they cannot control how we apply the learned knowledge into use. We cannot control their actions and their willingness to apply what they learn.

What is more important is the message that they bring across to others. What appalls me are the ignorance, hatred, and rude languages that have been used, especially when a question is asked in earnest. For example, there is this 13-year old boy asking for help in determining how he can tell his homophobic parents that he is gay. The replies have been quite disgusting - especialy one that replied with "You should commint suicide."

Now, doesn't that raise a bigger concern with the language?

I am just as appalled as anyone here with the use of improper grammar and spelling - but the messages - now they are just absolutely harmful, demoralising and dangerous.

With a suggestion of suicide, or suweecide to a 13 year old boy, the spelling now becomes of no concern. It's the abuse with words, not abuse of words that can make a real dangerous impact on anyone.

well, there are many majors that do not require more than one section of college level English. their majors do not stress writing, so therefore they get by with the most remedial skills.

many CEO's have the most terrible grammar skills.

by the way, i don't use capital letters when i am casually posting or emailing, but i always try to use proper grammar.

there is even a spell checker!!!!!

It drive me crazy, too. I'm a big fan of English grammar. Not perfect at it, but I notice things that make people notice me. I just try not to point it out with people who know me...it bores them after a while and I don't want to alienate anyone.

Scary, isn't it? I am also annoyed with kids who want others to do their homework and the people who actually do it. How will they learn anything that way? We have a whole generation of near illiterates.

I am in no way appalled at the horrible use of grammar and spelling online, I am however, appalled at the horrible misuse of our tax dollars, I am even more appalled at the various levels of abuse parents are allowed to use on their kids before someone steps in to stop it, I am really really appalled at how many of our sons and daughters are losing their lives in Iraq and the fact that no one really shows they care, i am even more disgusted at the thought of having toyotas in NASCAR. bad grammar and spelling isnt appalling, its just a lack of learning from teachers not teaching.

ya I know!! People don't value English anymore and it really frustrates me to hear it spoken so carelessly and how my friends think I'm stupid to keep correcting them every time. but what can possibly change the minds of so many people drastically??
