I recently found out a neighbor of mine died in his home. The mail began piling up and the postman put things together. The man was discovered dead but a little over a week had passed. I’m told his dog ate a good portion of the deceased’s calf & hamstring during this time. Is this normal? Would a dog actually begin eating a human after such a short time? I was considering adopting this dog until I heard this story. If I were to adopt the dog, would he now try to eat parts of my body while I’m sleeping?

Nope...The dog is trained to treat living things with respect and to eat meat. After you die, you are not longer living and are indisinguishable from meat to a hungry dog.

Actually, the same thing happens to some humans who are starving and surrounded by dead people. They do not live their lives searching for live people to eat either.

It is possible. In my community the humane society had a dog that had murdered its owner. They did not think anything about this and allowed it to be given a new home of an elderly person. One night the dog jumped in bed with the persn and chewed their neck so that they bled to death. Sheriff found the dog which had eaten part of the deceases neck. some time later when neighbors notices a bad smell coming from the house and had not seen the person or dog in the meantime.

The dog most likely only did so as an act of desperation. Just think of it this way. If you where locked up somewhere alone and you didn't have any food, and your dog just died, would you be tempted to eat him, if you where desperate enough for food?

Dogs are intelligent creatures, but unrestrained by the rules of human society. They are certainly smart enough to tell the difference between a living person and a corpse. They will eat carrion, if the circumstances arise, but I have never heard of a dog actually attacking a live human in order to kill and eat them.

This is a very good question, it is nature for the dog to eat, whatever it can find , the owner of the dog probably did not have dog food out for the dog,but I don't think that you would ever have to worry about the dog eating you,it was probabley starving, and the owner was dead , no one to feed the dog,and it had to survive, if no one adopts the dog they will put it down.

human beings have killed and eaten dogs, why could the canines devour the human? All issues considered i do not imagine you've some thing to fret about. you may comprehend if the canines began to devour on your leg interior the midst of the evening. And he in common words did what he had to so he might want to stay alive. no longer some thing may worry me about the undesirable canines in any respect.

The poor dog hadn't eaten in a week. They're carnivores. Figure it out.

I'm sure the dog is safe; adopt him.

woah! consider this would you really want a dog with your buddy inside of his tummy? i would say its normal because he was hungry its the same reason humans go 2 canibalism in a situation like that... knowing that you were going to adopt him until you knew that i would say go for it because it he was just hungry and most likely not going to kill you and eat you if you feed it right :)

The dog was behaving as dogs do. No, he would not be very likely to chew on you. The poor creature needs love and decent care. If you can't give that, please leave the dog to someone who will care for it.

...And this question is in "Cooking and Recipes"?!?!?!

I'm sorry-- this is a very understandable but sad story.

Adopt the dog. He won't eat you unless you've been dead for a few days.

....Just one more thing--- Since this question is in "Cooking and Recipes", can I make a really tasteless joke about this??!!?! PLEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!
