Do you think governments milk religous teachings, to keep the masses supporting them?

Like Bush & his whole 'God directed holy war against the Axis of Evil'?

Mabye it's effective to make people think we're in the end times by using the Bible/revalations as your play-book, and by milking it they can make money, grab resources for money etc.

What's saying this hasn't already been done a dozen if not hundreds of times before in the past? From some examples I've seen it looks very much that way.
