I've read horrible stories in the internet, regarding qualifications not being recognized, employers asking for canadian experience, immigrants with PhD who have no choice but working at a McDonalds or Tim Hortons

But I'm in Canada and so far all the immigrants I know are working in their fields, happy and some of them earning a lot of money, I know a couple of people who are being called for interview on the other side of the country every week and the companies pay for their flight all the way west!

What have you seen so far?

Every now and then I run in to a cabbie with a PhD. But, then, a few of those are white Canadian-born cabbies with PhDs in, er, philosophy or similar...

(And sometimes they're just guys who like driving cabs.)

With absolutely nothing to back me up on this -- when it comes to the horror stories, I wonder about the language skills involved. There's limited utility for a pharmacist, for example, with limited English/French.

I'm from an immigrant family and it's true that quite often the qualifications from universities and colleges back home aren't recognized here. It also has to do with the area of education, the age of the applicant and english skills. I know people who worked in coffee shops, cleaned houses and worked as labour workers in computer chip companies and many of their coworkers were professors, physicists etc.
I also think it depends on your passion and confidence. When you arrive and have the drive you can accomplish anything, but also when you enter a place that is unknown then you become self conscious and lose some of that drive and hope. Then it's easier to find people that you can identify with, like other immigrants and just settle into that life.

Matt H is thoroughly properly. i'm Colombian and that i help him. that is complicated to "instruct" and "moralise" the historic peoples of this territory, because they were too many human beings (African and Amerindian slaves) with finished different ideologies, languages, customs, etc. This communities of human beings are through a strategies the once that composed countless the undesirable inhabitants in Latin us of a. it really is why predominantly ecu international locations, together with Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Uruguay have extra perfect existence situations. international locations together with Brazil, Colombia, the DR, Peru and Bolivia, ought to take their time to make education for each human being (yet you comprehend education isn't loose, and the authorities did no longer have too a lot funds lower back on the time). In Colombia accepted and secondary education are completely loose because the perfect year. yet another reason is that the united states of a relieve is finished flat, there are some mountains interior the East yet it really is all. that isn't any longer complicated to get from section to the different. South us of a and Mexico have complicated relieve (jungles, swampy soil, very enormous mountains together with the Andes, etc.) So the human beings who stay in this zones a strategies from the capital cities are poorer too. And yet another ingredient is this multiple ecosystem and relieve is perfect for any variety of crop, together with cocaine or marijuana. and there is a huge call for interior the united states of a. It brings drug dealing, etc. Colombian president wanted to legalise it, so it stopped being a reason for conflict, yet human beings say no, because of their imperialistic and conservative recommendations. yet we are gradually starting to be and no stepped forward usa had a pleasing and peacefull historic past, loot at Germany, uk, France, us of a, etc. the Falkland Islands have only about no human beings and they are mantained through the Brits, that is impressive that they did not stay ok.

My husband is a prime example of a german immigrated to Canada 24 years ago. He has a great job, and loves living in Canada, and would never move back to Germany...ever!
I own a restaurant in a small town north of Toronto, and we have Germans come in everyday to eat, who are living happily in Canada, some have started their own businesses and are enjoying it here

I don't have any specific examples, but I know that immigrants are everywhere. If they want to work in their field, they can, but they may have to be patient to get there.... just like anyone else. We all have to pay our dues! I know that I have seen doctors, specialists, etc that are immigrants. Canada gives all people equal opportunities, but, like I said before, sometimes we have to work for it.

Please ignore the bigots and extreme ignorant, the vast majority of Canadians are not like that.

Every Canadian was an immigrant at some point, so needless to say there are countless success stories. Your best bet is to contact one of the groups that helps new arrivals settle in. I bet they have lots of stories on file for you.
