The Storm hit that Sunday, and it was Monday early AM that the levees broke. If you go to www.nola.com there is an interactive timeline of when the storm hit and when the levees broke...it's a great resource.

August 29, 2005 Early A.M. is when the storm actually hit.

There wasn't really anybody in the city to see when the levees actually broke, but the general assumption is that it was late afternoon on the 29th. Water continued to pour into the city for close to a week while the Corps of Engineers tried to slow the flow by repairing what they could on the breaks.

Parts of Metairie flooded because of canals that overflowed, which had nothing to do with the levees. The pumps were shut down because there was nobody there to operate them.

Now they're talking of putting up *safe houses* where the pump operaters can stay in safety during the storn, so they can keep the water running off to wherever it's supposed to go instead of overflowing the canals and flooding subdivisiions.
