Hello, which is the correct answer that can be filled in the blank? The text book says the answer is #3 but I feel #2 is correct...

Bears store large amounts of fat prior to hibernation, because fat - when oxidized - supplies both the energy and the water ( blank ) to survive.

1, animal needs
2, animals need
3, the animal needs
4, the animals need

It sounds to me #3 is grammatically correct. The singular form "the animal need" stands for Bears as the species. In English it is seen as singular, as in the case of the sentence above. Answer #2 is twice incorrect: it is lacking of the introductory article "the" and the noun "animals" is in the plural form.

Why use the article in the sentence, you might ask yourself? Because the "animal bear" (species) was previously mentioned in the sentence, then you would have to specify "which animal species?" (answer: the bears') So, you would have to clearly state in the blank that you were referring to the animal species previously introduced in the sentence anyway, by making use of the definite article "the".

I think you can use either 2 or 3. they are both correct but 3 would be my choice because it specifies 'the' animal meaning the bear, because all animals dont hibernate

It would be number 3 because animals is referrin to more than one type of animal. Also just so you know, not all bears truly hibernate, some just "winter sleep"

I kind of like 2 better also. I would prefer to add "that" as the first word of #2, but even without it, I feel that it reads all right. The subject Bears, is plural after all, so that seems to make #2 more in harmony with the rest of the sentance.

3. You're talking about a single animal in the second part and you need a definite article, "the", to go along with it.

It is number 3.

English is wierd in that, when the noun is singular, the verb has the appearance of being plural (the added "s"), and then the noun is plural, the verb appears to be singular.

#3 is correct. I can't explain why but, as a native English speaker, I can just tell you that it is.
