Quite simply, you never appreciate what you have until you lose it. You take reading for granted..until you lose your sight.. or you don't have access to books.. you don't think about breathing until you can't catch your breath.. then you love it.. you crave it.. you panic to have it back..

To Kill a Mockingbird (1960)

* Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.
o Pt. 1, ch. 2
o Jean Louise(Scout)Finch

Do you "love" to breathe? You would if you knew you were dying.

We breathe without even thinking about it, even if breathing is essential to our lives. We take it for granted.

We take reading for granted, too. It's only when I thought about not being able to read that I realized how important reading is in my life.

I might be wrong but to me it sounds like they are talking about their eye sight. I guess how you take for granted the things you do normally. Breathing , seeing, smelling, hearing, and touching.

When we are secure and comfortable we take things for granted. When they are threatened we begin to recognize their value to us.
