The parenthesis are the "direction" of the sound. And both sets of characters are the same.
And just to clarify, all dialects of Chinese use the same characters besides the phonetic pinyin and Taiwanese spelling. So you should actually say "simplified chinese" and "traditional chinese" because both sets of characters you posted can be for Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese, etc. etc.

As the previous poster said it's nénglià ng which means "energy" or "capabilities."
ie ä»çè½éå¾å¤§ - he has a lot of energy.

Check out Alta Vista's Babel Fish. I always use it to translate Chinese to English. It's pretty good, and it's FREE!
Just do a Yahoo search and it will come up. Be careful not to pick the Babel Fish Translation Services.

If you're thinking about traveling in China or Taiwan, there are some pretty good sites her. I don't know about China, but we have a site in Taiwan for foreigners, called tealit.com. It might help you a little bit. It is designed for teachers, but you can also find some info you may need, too.
