Lets give a good and honest answer here: There is no one best place, because typically engineers only last three years with a company. It is not because they are good, bad or indifferent. As technology progress, so must the Engineers experience progress and be able to come up with new ideas and new product. So never strap yourself down to one company for the long haul. You don't grow and neither does your value being an Engineer.
Let's break down communications. RF Engineering, Microwave Engineering, wireless technology, Analog and Digital, SMT technology, Hardware Engineer, Test Engineers, and power.
Each area will sharpen your skills to be a better Engineer. In the AM/FM Broadcasting Industry, it is typically a mans job, with a very tiny group of female Engineers.
TCXO/VCXO, and Filter Engineers has a mix of mostly male and some female engineers. In the other engineering areas there are more women.
The Mama Bells and Baby Bells are logical areas that are much easier to get into and the three year rule does not apply. But most Engineers that go that route, never really grow in Engineering talent or money.
Take a serious look in this direction:
The silent Giant of the electronics Industry, is the Security Industry. The need for Home land security devices is really hot on the list. The Fire Alarm Industry with Honeywell Corp is the most challenging, and will be able to use all your talents in engineering including communications. Life safety will always be on top. Other parts of the security industry is the Gate access and tele-entry design is very interesting. CCTV Industry with GE has audio and video with Cat5 or RG6 cable. Burglar alarms are also hot, and the best company to work for is GE in that area. I hope I have answered your question, not just for you, but for anyone else that might have this same question.

The best place will be where you won't have to drive long to get to, pays good, has good benefits, and your boss and co-workers are nice. Pretty much any manufacturer of cell phones, computers, or temperature control. I happen to be in temperature control. I love it.
