I seem to remember being able to automatically alphabetize items in Word but cannot find this option. Also if there is this option, what if I have the items numbered and then alphabetize them? Will this mess up the numbers?

Your data does not have to be in a table, but it is better if it each entry is on its own line.

Then, even though it's not a table, click Table - Sort and it will be alphabetical.

If you used "Bullets and Numbers" to number them, the text will be alphabetical with the numbers in the right order, too. If you typed the numbers, SORT will sort it by number.

I hope you have your data in a table with headers over each column.

Select the entire table.
cl Table
cl Sort
You will indicate on which column to sort.

If the numbers are in a separate column and you sort alphabetically, yes, the numbers will get messed up -- however -- if need be, you can resort by the header of the numbers column.

You could also keep two copies of the data - one alpha, the other by number.

You first have to put all your data in a table then click on TABLE > SORT on the menu. Then select the best option of sorting you want. The numbers should go along with your data as well (i.e. they will get sorted out as well together with your worded information).

Hope this helps!

Select the list or table you want to sort.
On the Table menu, click Sort.
Select the sort options you want.

About your second question, No, it won't mess up the numbers
