Limewire is a service, and is not illegal. Downloading or sharing anything covered by copyright (music, software, movies etc) is illegal. It's a violation of international copyright law, punishable by fines of up to $150,000 per song/software/movie or whatever. The RIAA has been zealously prosecuting people for sharing and downloading music. So far they have filed lawsuits against almost 20,000 people and have won almost 100% of the cases. Since the average fine would be millions of dollars, most of those charged settle for a smaller amount, usually $10,000 - $20,000, although some have paid more.

What happens if you have downloaded some songs?
Like any P2P service u can get viruses off of it.
It is downloading a file from someone else's computer that could have viruses on it.

Yes, it is illegal. You are taking someones hard worked for music. The police aren't going to come knocking down your door if you have downloaded a few songs. I use it rarely to download songs I don't know to see if I want to have it or not.

Its a P2P service, I wouldn't call the service illegal but it is what you download, such as music that can be illegal.

It's share ware so everyone that uses it shares their song files with the next person and so forth as long as you don't sell the music for profit!!!! thats a no- no!
