Can anyone answer the following questions:

Are they really small?
Do they yap?
Are they not greatly intelligent?

I live with my mother at the moment and she really wants to get a dog now that she has retired. She loves these dogs in appearance. I, on the other hand, prefer bigger dogs and highly intelligent ones, such as border collies. Obviously I would love any dog we got but I'd just like to know the answers to the above. I heard that this breed is just about average in intelligence - anyone know if this is true? Also I know that smaller dogs tend to 'yap' annoyingly - is this true of the Cavalier?
thanks..

They are a smaller dog, but they are a spaniel, they are not as small as some of the toy breeds. They are not "tiny" They are hardy and beautiful dogs. They are not yappy. I bought one for my mother and she rarely barks, but they DO bark, like all dogs, they dont tend to be excessive barkers and have a lower toned bark than a smaller breed of dog. Cavaliers are EXTREMELY intellegent. They are fast learners and can be very loyal and loving to thier owners. They are more gentle than and very sophsicated dogs. They are relatively new breed to the US and havent been ruined by bad breed too much yet, BUUUUUUT they are fast becoming a very sought after breed and there are many bad breeders out there cropping up. Some are even crossing them with other breeds for designer dogs already DONT FALL INTO THAT TRAP. Since they are rarer, finding one under 800$ is hard for a well bred dog, if you are looking at purbreds. They come in 4 color patterns and its said the Blenhiem is the most intellegent of them.
Blenhiem - is the White and Red mixed pattern
Ruby - Is a solid, russet Red and very shiny and beautiful
Black and Tan - Black body with tan spotting like the rottwieler or doberman color pattern
Tri-color - Which is the same as the Black and Tan but this is covered in white spotting evenly over the body.

I used to have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniel bitches, a tri-colour and a blenheim.
They really were lovely companions and I do miss them.
Are they small ? Well, I could carry one under each arm if the need arose. Children would often see them and think they were puppies when they were actually fully grown. Dogs tend to be a bit bigger than bitches.
Do they yap ? No.
Intelligent ? I think so, although that's not at all easy to quantify.
Dogs are as individual as humans. They all have their own character traits, quirks and funny little habits.
A bitchh would probably be calmer than a dog but I guess it depends on the situation. I'm thinking of a dog who was relatively aggressive, but he was in a household where there several Cavalier bitches as well. Cavaliers in general have a lovely temperament. Ruby bitches, I'm told, tend to have an eye for the fellas.

(That was a deliberate mis-spelling. Apparently ***** gets censored but bitches doesn't. Very strange.)

Hi there. Cavalier KC spaniels .... not really tiny but smaller than the King Charles Spaniel ( look up on internet if confused..they are two separate breeds). They arent too yappy but do alarm bark like it was said before.... they arent anywhere near as intelligent as B Collies though imo they are more friendly in general and you are likely to have less probs- thats my opinion. CKC spaniels can have some heridertary probs so check these out first and make sure litter have been checked. BCollies are lovely dogs but can exhibit some collie behaviours when living in a home... again look this up on net too!!!... both lovely dogs ..we have both and many other dogs.... either is a great choice... ohhhh forgot to mention that collies can also sometimes be very very noisy ( more barky than yappy thou).

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, thats a mouth full, are intellegent and easily trained. They are companion dogs and don't like to be left alone. They do best with older children and tend to be wary of strangers. They are typically 12-13 inches tall and weigh 10-18 pounds thy are really small. The breed is an average shedder. They tend to get overweight very easy and are prone to heriditary eye problems, dislocatting knee caps, back problems, ear infections, and early onset of deafness. However with a good breeder you should elimante most of these problems. Border collies are very intellegent but very energized and require lots of excercise, not to be left in a back yard but to be a jogging partner. If you want a bigger dog like a cavalier you could consider a cavalier/cocker mix or a cocker spaniel. Cocker spaniels are intellegent and aren't barkers (at least my two aren't). If you go to the bottom website and take the quiz it will help you find the perfect dog for your website and make your decision easier.

This site should tell you all you need to know about the breed. They are very sweet natured dogs & ideal first dogs if you have little experience. They are the largest of the Toy breeds & big enough to be a "proper" dog. It is very important that you buy direct from a reputable breeder, there are so many being bred by puppy farmers & people who haen't a clue what they are doing. Make sure the parents have had all the necessary health tests for inherited diseases.

I have a three year old tri-color King Charles, and he's absolutely the best dog I've ever had!! He's pretty intelligent, but not exactly the smartest dog. He doesn't seem to yap a lot, and he is very people-friendly; great with children! He's a wonderful companion, and I can't say that I have any complaints; everyone that I talk to who has one seems to agree with me. He loves to play outside, and chase squirrels. I'm sure you and your mother will be very pleased.

They are not small breed dogs like chihuahua's. I've seen a few that my friends have, and they seem to have a very friendly spirit, and just gorgeous temperament. they're not overly boisterous dogs, nor hyperactive, so probably suitable for your home. I tend to find they are calm. The one's i've seen so far have been quiet, they don't seem to yap, but this is something that is a habit or can be trained in them...
They're great house dogs/ family dogs.

they are quick, very intelligent and clever and spirited. The will walk twice a day and be good playmentes. Like all daogs, they need to be trained properly.| They are great compnions, friendly and extremely under rated. They snap no more than any other dog. They love to play and are happy.
You are only going to get out of any dog what you put in. They will do obiedience and agility and games if you teach them
