The link appears obvious. What happens when one species thinks every other aspect of creation was put there merely as toys and tools for itself? Zero respect, that's what. Animals, plants, soil and air become economic goods for human desires ... and the environment pays the price for something that regularly touts its humility. In fact, it is the greatest arrogance and selfishness.

You people crack me up. You phrase your statement in the form of a question, and then hold firm to a belief stated in your sub-heading. By western religion I assume you mean Christianity. So which scriptures tell one to have "zero respect" for plants, animals, etc, treating them as "merely toys and tools"? You have a mis-lead anger. The real problem that causes environmental disasters are greed among business. Greed, might I add, is one of the seven deadly sins in the Bible...

So as you see, the link DOESN'T appear obvious because there is none. Maybe to you it does, but judging from all the previous responses to your "question" it doesn't.

Where do you people get this stuff? It's certainly not from any reading of history. Christianity is no more or less respectful of life than any othr religion. I'll grant you the West has done more in terms of things like globaal warming, etc. But as should be obvious from the behavior of China these days, its only because technology happened to develop there first.

And FYI--all the whole range of technologies being developed to stop the environmental decline--along with the sciences of ecology and climate change--are Western. No one else is doing a thing to fix the problem.

Next time check your facts.

I don't think its correct to blame china. 1/4 of the world's CO2 emissions comes from the United States.

Admittedly china has some huge environmental problems but their leadership has at least recognized this as a huge problem and is acting switftly to try to prevent this from getting worse. In the US, on the other hand, our leaders have not really acknowledged these problems and refuse to deal with them.

Whoever comes up with a technological alternative to fossil fuels and curbs CO2 emissions will be humanity's hero--and an extremely wealthy one at that.

Western religion?

Look at China my friend. In the past 20 years they have killed off the white dolphin and also killed nearly 80% of all wildlife in the Yangtze River.

China will destroy our planet if we do not stop them. Enacting more regulations on Western culture will drive more jobs to China and speed up the inevitable conclusion.

So keep blaming us and buying at Walmart and see where it gets us in 20 years.

No, it has nothing to do with western religion or any other religion. The burning of wood(s form of enviornmental devastation) go's back to many millenia before the Pyramids were even built. Our pre- "human" ancestros burned forests down inorder to get prey out of the forests. The devestation they caused in all parts of the world had nothing to do with western riligion or civilization or any feeling of surperiority. It had to do with finding something to fill their stomachs first. One archaelogist ( don't know his name)said that the selection pressures for such devstating behaviour as figuring out how to burn a forest to get animals out or the best way to mass murder wild horses off a cliff was subconsciously selected for by females who wanted their mate to bring them something to replace lost iron form their menstruation. Seems odd doesn't it. But, women lose blood through menstruating. The best supply of iron is blood in all animals. Especially, if all of the Iron minerals are covered with snow, tall grasses or mud and dirt. But, the hunters and their kids had to eat too. So, enviornmental devastation can be traced many hundreds of years globally. Before western civilization began. It was the Neanderthals who hunted the Mamoths to extinction not the Ancient Greeks or Egyptians. The Neanderthals went extinct over 20 000 years ago. The Egyptian civilization started like 7 000 years ago. You're right. It is the greatest arrogance and selfishness on our part to want to exist and to pass on our genes. But if your parents weren't so arrogant and selfish. You wouldn't exist to pose such a question here.I'd say enviornmental devastation can be traced to human reporduction directly. Since, we're the only species who understand such a concept as Enviornmental Devastation. Obviously we as humans are responsible for how pure we want our water to be or if we want to save whales or make them go extinct even faster.
