It might be a good idea to rule-out a hiatal hernia. This is a condition where the stomach pushes up through the diaghram (the breathing muscle that lies underneath the lungs). This condition can be 'positional' and aggravated by lying down and lessened by standing upright.

The medical term for this is orthopnea. There are several things it could be. Check out the link or google orthopnea.

I had the same problem. I went to the doctor for it and they put me on a muscle relaxer. You might also try using an inhaler.

are you very heavy? My mom is heavy and can't sleep on her back or she suffocates.
