I spent two weeks in Tasmania a couple years back and took my own car down. So i'd say get a car!

With a tour you are restricted to what they are doing and where they are going. With a car you can go where you want, when you want and do what you want (as long as it's legal). I was able to go off the main roads alot and do alot of smaller towns that bus trips don't do and it is so worth it!

Also make sure you do Strahan there is a fantastic day river cruise and then in Hobart do the Cadbury factory tour! Free chocolate!!!!!

Oh and as for the first comment about NRMA being all the way on the mainland you are a idiot mate! Tassie have NRMA too so get your facts straight before giving adivice. Also if you hire a car they have their own road side assistance.

A car is the ONLY WAY TO GO. I live here and there are great places that the tours dont go to- a car will also allow you freedom to do as you want when you want. You can go to the beach fo rthe surf, drive up the mountains for the view or just loose yourself in the forests (oh watch out for Gunns employees that dont like the public seeing what is really going on in the forests). Contrary to Stephen x- opinion is is unfortunately the interstate visitors that tend to drive on the wrong side of the road, it seems that they are so used to blindly driving down a straight highway on cruise control that they lack the ability to judge corners and cornering speed, so make sure you drive to the conditions but frankly all the overseas students at the Uni have no trouble exploring the place without any traffic mishaps so it shouldnt be a problem.

Hire a car! Definately.

A lot of the best places to see are not on "the Tourist route". With a car, you have greater freedom to see what YOU want to see. Tours are worth considering to go to some of the more remote parts, also if you plan to do a trek, use a tour service, saves hassle!.

And yes, Tassie has it's own RACT (like roadside assistance if you break down).

The roads can be windy and narrow, don't expect even the main hwy's to be more than dual carriage ways in most places.

Tasmania is a great place to travel. There is public transport for tourists, however it is not great. If you rented a car you would be able to get so around and see so much more. The other thing about Tassie is that although the island is small in relative terms it is quite spread out and difficult to get to the different places with out your own transport. Contact my friend at Huon travel he may have some good deals - his name is Geoff. The Huon is a must see

I would hire a car as the driving is not hard. The only thing you have to watch is the fact that Tasmania is well known to not have a straight stretch of road anywhere in the whole state. My mother just phoned me today and she is in Tasmania at the moment having traveled there on the ferry with her car. She said that her friend and herself are feeling car sick with all the winding. I also remember the winding roads from when I was there a couple of years ago.
It is also advisable to book accommodation ahead as there is not as much accommodation as you would expect. Going to Tasmania is like stepping back in time by about 30 years as the amount of services that they have are from that time. You are more likely to have someone pump your petrol for you and if you think you are going to drive into a town and go to Kentucky Fried or Maccas then think again as those things are only in the Biggest of towns.
But I would definitely hire a car that way you can stop if you get car sick.

If you are a confident driver then a car definitely as there are some fantastic places to find that you wont get to see on a bus tour. The roads in Tassie are not brilliant so if you are not familar driving on windy, narrow and/or dirt roads then maybe a bus tour would be better.

have fun and enjoy

get a car my friend you won't regret it,with a bus tour you are locked into their schedule, you know what i mean-a certain time to see this, a certain time to have lunch,a certain time to see that.
blah blah

a car on the other hand-total freedom, say you find someplace you love- stay longer,a local tells you of some great spot no problem jump in the car and head off, don't like an area move on no hanging around

ive taken my car over and drove around and wouldn't do it any other way,if your a competent driver you'll have no problems on the roads over there,

here is a site to help you get around

When I go to Tasmania I alway do a tour because in some areas the locals haven't decided with side of the road to drive on as yet & its a long way from the mainland for the NRMA if u breakdown.
